Construction Report: Projects on University, Davis, and Homestead

This week, drivers should look out for closures to usual routes on University Ave. southbound, Davis Rd. eastbound, and to through-traffic on Homestead Dr. in North Pole due to construction.

University Avenue

On Tuesday, Rewak Dr. will reopen, and University Avenue between Airport Way and Rewak Dr. will close at the same time.

This means that drivers will NOT be able to turn into Fred Meyer West from University Avenue southbound. They will have to make a right turn onto Airport Way, or come in from University Avenue northbound onto Rewak Dr.

Turning left or right will be compulsory at the intersection of University Ave. and Airport Way, and Airport Way will have lane restrictions. Washington Dr. will also be available for drivers to turn onto Rewak Dr.

Davis Road

A paving project is set to begin on Davis Rd., which is expected to be completed in July. This week, drivers can anticipate a closure of eastbound traffic (towards Lathrop St. from University Ave.) on Davis Road. This means that drivers will only be able to access Davis via Peger Rd. rather than University Ave.

After a week, however, the eastbound lane will reopen, and the westbound lane will close. Drivers will still need to use the Mitchell Expressway to access Davis through University, however, due to the Airport Way/University Ave. closures.

To add to the challenge, after a weeklong westbound closure, the eastbound lane will close again.

Because of all of these moving pieces, Caitlin Frye, information officer with the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, says that drivers will be informed in a multitude of ways. “Information will be communicated to drivers with message boards that are on Davis, so if you use Davis all the time, just pay attention to those message boards. We’re going to be putting things out on AlaskaNavigator.org, 511, and on social media,” Frye says.

Homestead Drive

In North Pole, a project on Homestead Dr. between Old Richardson Highway and Perimeter Rd. will see the installation of a new asphalt path that will provide a connection between Homestead and the separated path on the Old Richardson Highway.

Along with this new path, the contractor will be grinding up old pavement and adding a fresh layer of asphalt.

Although the road has been closed to through traffic as of this past weekend, it is still accessible to residents and businessowners.
