Saturday, March 18 is St. Baldrick’s Day in Interior Alaska

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The St. Baldrick’s Day event helps raise money for children’s cancer research.

Volunteers from all over the Interior will make their way to the Carlson Center on Saturday to participate in the 19th annual head shaving fundraiser. Doors open at 6 p.m. and will stay open until 9 p.m.

Those who choose to be a part of the event can either shave their head, cut off 8 inches or more, or just be there to support the community in funding children’s cancer research. Monetary donations are also accepted. There will be volunteer, state licensed barbers and hair stylists to do the shaving and cutting. People can let St. Baldrick’s donate the hair, or can do it themselves; however, anyone with highlighted or bleached hair will not be able to donate.

Children of all ages are diagnosed with cancer every day and helping to raise money for children’s cancer research is the reason behind the St. Baldrick’s Day event.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation was introduced to Fairbanks 19 years ago by the local Fairbanks Fraternal Order of Leatherheads Society, or Fools, which is a fraternal organization made up of local firefighters from across Interior Alaska.

The reasoning behind the firefighter participation was to contribute a little more to the community in hopes of helping children that have been diagnosed with cancer.

Fire departments participating in this year’s St. Baldrick’s fundraiser include the Fairbanks, University, and North Star Volunteer Fire Departments. Also participating are the Ft. Wainwright, Eielson and Rural Deltana Fire Departments.

With the goal of raising $20,000 for childhood cancer research at the local Fairbanks St. Baldrick’s Day event, over 40 participants will be shaving their heads.
