FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Throughout the past few weeks, Alaskans have been affected by a very busy fire season.

But have you ever wondered what a volunteer firefighter does?

The Steese Volunteer Fire Department is opening their firehouse doors on Saturday, July 9 to give families a glimpse into the facility. The event will also provide educational information about the department.

Department officials say they have a day of hands-on activities planned, as well as live demonstrations with firefighting equipment.

There will also be a station tour and obstacle courses for the entire family.

Organizers hope the open house will give the community an opportunity to learn about how the department and volunteers keep people safe.

The open house will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday at the Steese Volunteer Fire Department located at 800 William C. Leary Lane.
