FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) -It’s a day many of us have been looking forward to.

An abundance of yellow bags were visible along the sides of the roads Saturday because Clean Up Day took place in our community.

Throughout the week, teams of volunteers had already been out and about, picking up that unsightly trash that litters our area roadways and sidewalks.

We went out to speak with some of the volunteers who didn’t mind spending their Saturday picking up trash.

Aisha Bray represented the Rotary Club of Fairbanks and mentioned in the short time she and her crew were out along Van Horn Road they collected at least 20 bags of trash.

Bray said “It’s very important to me to keep the community clean. I mean just looking back at the section that we just cleaned up, it looks so nice and inviting and it will look great when it greens up instead of being covered up with garbage.”

A little way up the road was the Napa Auto Parts team. These volunteers mentioned they had collected 40 bags of trash and were still collecting more.

Jeff Daravivanh, a sales associate from Napa Auto Parts said, “It’s heartbreaking our beautiful land gets littered on, and with all the snow that’s melting exposing everything, the snow hides it in the winter time. We love our community and it’s our part to give back, you know, we want to see a clean environment.”

Another volunteer, Telecommunications Specialist from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Jasmine Stokes said, “It’s unfortunate that there is so much garbage out here, but it’s really nice that we are able to go out here and get it cleaned up.”

In all, the community made a big difference in a short time helping get the roads clean again.
