Fort Wainwright holds special Thanksgiving meal for soldiers
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Wolves Den dining facility on Fort Wainwright hosted a Thanksgiving meal for our nation’s defenders.
According to Specialist Zachary Scarcliff, “It just gives soldiers a great opportunity to get out of the barracks, come have a great meal with your battle buddies, and just celebrate Thanksgiving.”
The meal was held the day before the holiday so that on the day itself, “Those who are here, and families who are here, they can actually celebrate at home,” Scarcliff explained.
Preparation began months ago. Staff Sergeant Dwayne Cruthird said, “I submitted this order back in June just to make sure we had enough food to provide for all the soldiers and their families.”
Turkey, Lobster Tail, steamship round, ham, shrimp cocktails, deviled eggs - all this and much more filled the bellies of hungry soldiers.
According to PFC Ethan Williams, “We made over 150 Cake Pops, 200 cupcakes.”
“It’s the best feeling in the world to provide a meal in the arctic for all these soldiers,” Cruthird said, adding, “I hope they enjoy every plate, every pastry, every salad they get today, and I hope they have a great Thanksgiving.”
All the hard work seems to have paid off.
Specialist Audelio Nieves, coming to the end of his meal, described the heaping of food he received. “Roast beef, stuffing, cheese, sweet potato, I don’t even know if I’m gonna finish this. I’m surprised I made it this far, I’m going to be honest with you.”
