Region VI XC running season reaches halfway point with North Pole Invitational
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Three meets down, three more to go for the Region VI high school cross country running season, which saw 85 runners navigate through the Chena Lakes Nature Trails Saturday.
Individually, the meet belonged to the Lathrop Malemutes, who saw the boys team sweep the top three spots with Benjamin Pilon (16:47), Asher James (17:01) and Sam Snavely (17:44) pacing the pack. Koen House (18:10) followed the trio in the 5-kilometer race, Gabe Haas (18:21) was the top runner out of Delta-Junction, while Gabe Angaiak, of Monroe Catholic, rounded out the top 10.
Lathrop’s Amy Pilon (20:06) outlasted teammate Abigail Haas (20:10) in the girls race, before Olivia Manley (21:22) was the first of four Wolfpack runners to reach the finish line next. North Pole’s Maria Mattox rounded out the top 10, while Miranda Wilkerson paced Monroe.
West Valley did not run its top competitors in this event, a program that individually claimed at least the top two spots for both the boys and girls in the first two meets of the season. Still, West Valley took the girls team score over Lathrop, while finishing runner-up behind the Malemutes in the boys event.
Up next on the Region VI Cross Country schedule, the Delta Invitational at 12 p.m. Saturday. Regionals are scheduled for September 25 after the Palmer and Eielson Invitationals, while the ASAA State Championships are slotted for October 9 in Anchorage.
