Eclipse Soccer Club leaves top youth tournament in country with three championships
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - 450 teams from across the map gathered in Blaine, Minnesota last week for the Target USA Cup, known as one of the top youth soccer tournaments in the country.
Traveling the furthest distance was the Eclipse Soccer Club, bringing five teams from Fairbanks for 10 days worth of competition against some of the best youth programs around the United States.
The Club put Fairbanks on the map throughout the tournament, as three Eclipse teams came away as champions in their respective divisions.
The 2008 Eclipse Boys, led by head coach Peter Shurr, posted a 19-1 goal differential in bracket play, which sparked the momentum of a championship run. In tournament action during the weekend, the ‘08 Boys squad blanked North Suburban 5-0, took down the Minnesota Rush 2-1, before topping Kickers FC 2-1 in the title game to take home the trophy.
The ‘05 Eclipse Girls displayed their dominance over a 10-day period, scoring 32 goals in six games during the weekday competition, before running through the weekend tournament for the title. After defeating Lakes United FC 6-0, the ‘05 squad, led by head coach Damon Crutcher, put up another six goals in the semifinals before defeating Wave SC 2-0 in the championship game.
“While other teams toured and explored the state and other fun events, the ’05 girls had cryotherapy appointments every other day and when they weren’t doing that, playing, or sleeping, we had film review and meetings to ensure their success on the field,” said Crutcher. “We felt we accomplished this with our 8-2 record on the trip.”
Lathrop’s Hanna Aemisegger held it down in net, posting seven shutouts in 10 matches, while allowing just one goal in the tournament.
North Pole’s Desi Dutra took care of the offense, netting 14 goals and dishing out seven assists during the Target USA Cup.
The ‘04 Eclipse Girls put on a clinic as well, with a 14-1 goals for/allowed ratio heading into tournament play. With three straight shutouts that were never in question, 5-0, 8-0 and 6-0, the ‘04 Girls return to Fairbanks as champions in U17 led by head coach Howard Maxwell.
Down in Tukwila, Washington the 2003-04 Eclipse Boys proved to the best around as well. While it took penalty kicks to decide a champion, Eclipse came up clutch at the Sounders FC Cup to claim yet another trophy for Fairbanks over the weekend led by head coach Reed Thomas.
