Alaska Goldpanners dominate Seattle Studs in season-opener
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - It was evident that the Alaska Goldpanners were eager to get on the diamond after many of the players had their recent collegiate seasons canceled. Meeting - and playing together - for the first time Wednesday, the Goldpanners put the bats and the arms together for a 7-2 season-opening victory over the Seattle Studs in Washington.
The Panners showed flashes throughout the game that leads fans to believe it should be an entertaining summer at Growden Memorial Park in Fairbanks. Marco Pirruccello, of Fresno State, produce the first Goldpanner run of 2021 when his RBI double scored Alton Gyselman of Yavapai College in the second inning. In the third, University of Arizona freshman Noah Turley launched a solo home run for the first Panner dinger of the season, but his night was far from over. In his next at bat, Turley blasted a grand slam to break the game open to 6-0. This, part of a 4-5, 6 RBI performance for Turley in his Goldpanner debut.
Pirruccello finished 3-5, while Grady Morgan (Butte College) and Travis Warinner (Yavapai College) also produced hits for the Panners in victory. On the mound, Alaska was just as stellar. Sam Brady, a Kansas Jayhawk, started the day on the bump allowing zero runs on four hits while striking out two before German Fajardo (Arizona) got the win on the mound, not allowing a hit over three of the middle innings. Tyler Franks (San Francisco State) allowed just one hit over two innings of work, before Buddie Pindel (Hawaii) closed the game in the ninth inning.
The win marks the first for the Goldpanners and for head coach Anthony Ferro, a solid start to the season. The Panners and Studs will go at it again Thursday, before they make the trek to Alaska. The Goldpanners are set to face the Peninsula Oilers for a three-game series June 5-7, with their anticipated Fairbanks debut coming June 10 at 6:30 p.m. against the Orange County Riptide at Growden Park. Season tickets for over 30 home games are available on their website.
