Fairbanks electric company giving away lilacs, celebrating 30th year of Arbor Day tree giveaway
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Arbor Day is right around the corner, and Golden Heart Electric Association wants to help you get into the spirit of the day with a free tree.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Golden Heart Electric Association’s member tree giveaway. This year’s plant is a Lilac tree. When mature, this shrub-like tree can grow up to 15 feet.
The giveaways will take place at three locations across the state: GVEA’s Delta Office, the Tanana Valley Fairgrounds, and the Coghill General Store in Nenana.
Meadow Bailey, GVEA Director of External Affairs and Public Relations detailed the purpose of this annual event saying, “Each year around Arbor Day we give trees out to our members, and the goal there is really to remind everybody that if you’re looking at your electric lines around your house, your right-of-way, make sure you don’t have trees that are encroaching on your right of way. Make sure you keep your trees trimmed and away from the right of way.”
The tree giveaway will take place on Saturday May 15, from 9 a.m. to noon, or while supplies last. Quantities are limited to one plant per family. For more information, visit GVEA’s website.
