FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - It’s calving season at the Large Animal Research Station (LARS), and this month new musk ox calves were welcomed into the world.

Sarah Barcalow, Lead Animal Care Technician with LARS, two of the calves, Harriet and Rosa, had a rough start.

One was “malpositioned”, and had to be pulled out of its mother early.

The other was showing early signs of heat stroke.

However, both calves are healthy now, and are being bottle-fed.

Barcalow explained that “LARS houses the only research herd of Musk Oxen in the world, so our mission is to provide education and outreach to the general public, but we also maintain the research herd for scientists both at UAF and across the globe, so people come from all over the world to work with the animals here.”

This calving season also saw a new reindeer calf.

The Large Animal Research Station is hoping to open for summer tours the last week of May.
