FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks Police Department, along with the Fairbanks Fire Department and Fort Wainwright’s 65th Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Company, investigated two suspicious boxes/packages at the First National Bank on Merhar Ave. in Fairbanks. Merhar, between Hunter Rd and the Sonic fast food restaurant, was closed for over two hours Thursday evening while the investigation took place.

According to Fairbanks Police Captain Scott Adams, FPD received a call about suspicious boxes, that were purportedly mailed by a disgruntled ex-customer of the bank.

“We got a call for some suspicious boxes here at the bank, [sent] from an ex-customer that they’ve had some issues with. We’re not too concerned about it but we take some standard safety measures when we get these kinds of calls,” said Cpt. Adams.

The Fort Wainwright EOD team was requested on scene to determine if the packages were an actual threat; first sending a robot into the bank to examine the boxes and then putting a member of the EOD team into a bomb suit for further inspection. The all clear was given at approximately 7:30 p.m. and FPD expects the roads to be open again within the next 30 minutes.

When asked if there was anything else that it was important for the public to know, Cpt. Adams said, “When you get a Nixle try not to be curious and go see what’s going on because it might not just be an accident, it could be we are looking for a dangerous person or something like this. It could potentially have some danger to it.”
