Alaska Industrial Hardware, Bering Straits Native Corporation announce employee vaccine mandate
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - In a notice on March 18th, Alaska Industrial Hardware and Bering Straits Native Corporation announced that their employees are required to receive a COVID-19 vaccination by August 1st.
According to the announcement, non-compliance with this policy will lead to unpaid leave unless a reasonable accommodation is approved.
According to a letter obtained from the Department of Health and Social Services by KTUU, “Private businesses have broad latitude to set the rules on access to their places of business subject to certain state, local and federal laws, of which civil rights laws requiring that private businesses not engage in unlawful discrimination are a primary example.”
Attorney Eric Meyer with the Fisher-Broyles Law Firm explained some of the policy’s accommodations, saying, “There are a couple of exceptions if you are going to have a vaccine mandate: if I have an allergy to the vaccine or if I have some other disability which precludes me from getting the vaccine, then the employer may be required to accommodate my disability if there is a reasonable accommodation available to the employer that wouldn’t create some kind of undue, what the law calls undue hardship.”
