FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - A sought after milestone for basketball players was eclipsed Friday night when Monroe Catholic senior Quinn McHenry stepped into a three-pointer to collect his 1,000th career high school point. McHenry, a recent Sonoma State University signee, paced the Rams with 16 points in their 68-42 win over the Valdez Buccaneers on the road to remain undefeated on the young season.

The Bucs hung tough with one of the best teams in Class 3A, as it was just a three-point game at the half. What followed the break was a tsunami of scoring from Monroe, dropping 27 points in the third quarter alone, highlighted by a McHenry dunk. Sophomore Malachi Bradley added 14 points, while senior Jase McCullough contributed 12 in the victory over their Aurora Conference foes.

The same two teams met on Saturday, but this one was already decided by halftime, unlike Friday’s contest. The Rams jumped out of the gates with 19-first quarter points, while holding Valdez to just five, which set the tone for a 50-point victory for Monroe. Bradley led all scorers with 22 points, as the Rams coasted to an 80-30 win to sweep their 3A counterparts over the weekend.

Monroe Girls Sweep

The Monroe girls were competing on the same road trip, facing the same school, within the same conference. Rams junior guard Katie Bast stole the show in game one, dropping a game-high 18 points in Monroe’s 43-30 conference victory Friday, while Shelby Eidenmiller chipped in 12. On Saturday, the Rams scored double-digits in each quarter en route to a 59-39 victory, as the Monroe programs went a combined 4-0 on their trip to Valdez. Eidenmiller led the way in game two, scoring 19 points, while Bast, a fellow backcourt member, had 17 in the victory. With both squads returning to Fairbanks, the Rams will visit the Hutchison Hawks Tuesday for some more Aurora Conference action.

Delta-Junction Hosts First Games

Over in Delta-Junction, both Delta programs hosted their first games of the year this weekend. On Friday, the boys scored 20+ points in three different quarters to propel them to 76-48 win over the Hutchison Hawks behind two bigtime performances. Austin Durham poured in a game-high 25 points, while Ben Bialik produced 18 more to collect the Aurora Conference win. Hutch was led by 19 points from Ryan Young, while Evan Mass added 10.

The following day, Delta hosted the Eielson Ravens for even more Aurora Conference competition. Durham picked up right where he left on in Friday’s win, scoring another 25 points in the Huskies’ 61-23 win, with James Caslin generating 14 points.

In the Delta/Hutch girls contest, the Hawks squeaked by with a 33-28 win, fending off the Huskies’ comeback efforts. Leigha Rosenthal led the Hawks with eight points, while Delta’s Laurdes Lester had 11 in the loss. The Huskies would bounce back on Saturday against Eielson, holding the Ravens to just two baskets in their 55-6 Aurora Conference win. Three Huskies reached double figures led by Jordyn Hill’s 12, while Nahgouy Rodrigues and Lester each had 10 points apiece.

Hutchison hosts Monroe Tuesday, while Eielson takes on the Class 4A West Valley Wolfpack on Tuesday as well.
