#5 UAF Rifle face #7 Air Force in Fairbanks for weekend series
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The #5 Alaska Nanooks rifle program are set for a top-10 match-up against #7 Air Force here in the Golden Heart City. The Nanooks are coming off a series loss to the Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs as they prepare for the final matches of the regular season before the 2021 Patriot Rifle Conference Champions in early February.
Despite the losses to TCU, Head Coach Will Anti says the confidence level with the ‘Nooks is great heading into their series with Air Force.
“I think we’re feeling pretty confident. I would say this was, even though we had a good performance this last weekend, we came back this week and we made some changes to the training schedule,” said Coach Anti. “We made a lot of technical and positional changes. Maybe a little bit of a risk, but I think we’re feeling confident enough where we were and that gave us permission to go down that explorative route a little bit.”
This season has been full of challenges for the Blue and Gold, as they have battled the coronavirus and some top-notch competition this season. Out of their five opponents on the year, four of them have been at least in the top-14 national rankings. Memphis University was 14th, Ole Miss sat 3rd, TCU was 4th and they will face Air Force who is 7th.
“Yeah it’s a hard schedule for sure, but that’s really intentional for us is that we need to be shooting against these teams that are really highly ranked,” said Coach Anti about their tough schedule. “Because at the end of the season we hoped to be shooting shoulder to shoulder with them on the national championships. The more exposure we get to shooting against competition of that level of intensity more it’s going to pay off in the end. That means we have a couple close matches here and there with some really good teams that don’t go our way and that’s ok. We’re really just trying to get the experience so at the end of the year we’re able to preform.”
Match 1 is set for 8 A.M. on Saturday at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range on the campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
