Pet of the Week: Socks the gentle Alaskan Husky
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - It’s time to meet Socks - the sweet and gentle Alaskan Husky guaranteed to melt your heart.
Here’s what Britley Calkins, an Animal Handler with Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Shelter, had to say about our Pet of the Week:
“Socks is a seven-year-old Alaskan Husky mix. She was brought into the shelter as a stray, unfortunately with a broken leg. So, after getting the proper veterinary care, we placed her in a foster. And since then, she’s been brought back to the shelter after her recovery.
At the foster they said she did great with the other dogs! She is very savvy at slipping her leash though, so that is something you’ll want to really pay attention too. We recommend harness training her and keeping her close to you just so she can’t escape and run off. We also advise if you have a large fenced in area, this might be a good area for Miss Socks to run and get out some of that energy for her.
She’s said to do well with strangers and adults. We don’t know how she does with kids or children but she’s been very friendly with her animal tenders here at the shelter.
Previously we believed she was an outside dog and had some mushing experience, but with this broken leg we do advise not to have her outside and she should be kept indoors. She still has a lot of spunk and a lot of energy, and would make a great family pet and a great outdoor companion.
Socks is just looking for her new forever home! Socks also has a kitty friend here at the shelter, along with multiple doggy friends, a couple rabbits, turtles, and chickens. If you’re interested in scheduling an appointment, please give the shelter a call.”
