University of Alaska Fairbanks Counselors help reduce Holiday induced stress

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Even in years without the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the holidays can be a stress-inducing time for many. With the virus likely worsening this trend, University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Student Health and Counseling Center counselors Kiana Carr and Sarah Jensen provided some holiday stress mitigation tips.

According to Carr, many factors including financial stress, unreachable family expectations, and the logistics of travel all contribute to a noticeable increase in stress during the holidays.

“During the holiday season we can set a lot of high expectations for ourselves to do a lot, to fit a lot in, see a lot of people, [and] do a lot of things. That can contribute to stress sometimes, and so it’s okay to say ‘no’ if you have a lot on your plate,” said Jensen.

“A couple additional tips for coping with stress over the holidays: get outside and get your natural vitamin-D if you can - fresh good nature air and a little bit of exercise - and I would just encourage everyone to check on your friends and your family, and your neighbors, because other people may be feeling the stress of the holidays too and would appreciate someone calling and checking in on them. Sometimes when we check in on other people we help ourselves too,” said Carr.
