FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) -During the month of October the Fairbanks Community Food Bank has challenged law enforcement professionals to collect food bank donations in a friendly competition to see who can raise the most money.

Yesterday, two businesses announced a combined $7,501 donation to the food bank on behalf of the State Troopers team -- the largest donation in the drive’s two-year history. Gene’s Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram donated $5,001 and Fairbanks Nissan donated $2,500 towards the cause.

This put the Alaska State troopers ahead with over $25,000 donated to the Food Bank.

The Troopers are followed by the Eielson Air Force Base Security Forces who have raised just over $4,000, the North Pole Police follow with a $3,397 donation so far, and Fairbanks International Airport Police and Fire raised around $2,100. Rounding out the field are the Fairbanks Emergency Communications Center, University of Alaska Fairbanks Police, and the Fairbanks Police Department.

“This food drive has been a big success for the Fairbanks Community Food Bank. Alaska’s law enforcement officers really care about our community and that’s why you see such a heated competition between neighbor agencies to raise the most money for this worthy cause,” said Captain Ron Wall, Commander of the Alaska State Troopers D Detachment. “The donations of canned food and money from citizens, troopers, police officers, dispatchers, and local businesses will help keep the food bank operating through the long, cold winter ahead.”

Another thing officers say makes this food drive so important is that when troopers or other law enforcement officers respond to a home and see that food is needed, they simply call the Foodbank and request a box -- filled with items like eggs, milk, meat and more -- be dropped off at no cost.

The donation drive ends at 9 a.m. on Monday, November 2, 2020. Anyone can make a donation to the Fairbanks Community Food Bank online at: https://www.fooddriveonline.org/fairbanksfoodbank/index.php?c=57e276a551
