FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - According to a dispatch from the Alaska State Troopers a suspect is currently on the run near Glennallen after failing-to-yield and attempting to shoot a trooper during a traffic stop.

On Friday, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Troopers in Glennallen received a REDDI report concerning a vehicle that almost caused a collision near the intersection of Gakona Lodge Road and E. Tok Cut-Off Highway. Around 9:40 a.m., Trooper Dispatch received a call from someone at the Gakona Lodge reporting the suspect vehicle was traveling toward the Richardson Highway.

Glennallen AST located the vehicle at 10:04 a.m. about two miles east of the Tok Cut-Off Highway. The Trooper initiated a traffic stop but the driver failed-to-yield and attempted to flee.  During the resulting pursuit, the driver of the suspect vehicle discharged a firearm at the Trooper near Mile 157 Richardson Highway. The Trooper was not injured and returned fire, but the suspect continued to flee. The suspect subsequently stopped and abandoned his vehicle, departed the area, and ran into the wood line near Mile 149 Richardson Highway.

Members of the Southcentral, Northern, and Southern Special Emergency Reaction Teams (SERT) responded, along with Helo-3, members of the Alaska Bureau of Investigation (ABI), and ‘B’ and ‘D’ Detachments' General Investigation Units (GIU).  AST is receiving operational and technical assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, National Parks Service, and Village Public Safety Officer Program.

Mark Emery Heinz is the driver of the subsequently abandoned vehicle and should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information please call 911.

The Richardson Highway remains closed between approximately Mile 134 and 165.  Updates will be provided.
